A Xmas Letter To My Son On The Other Side Of The World.
Dear Calum, Happy Xmas — this is how our year went here in Scotland.
Happy Christmas Calum,
It’s me again, reporting on the year 2020 in the McEwan household. This is how it went:
January
January is named after the god Janus — the God of beginnings and endings.
And January was the beginning for you Calum, the month of your birth. Our firstborn child. A child born out of love and affection (2nd child is born to be the playing thing for the first child).
Anyway — January was wet and cold.
February
February is named after the festival ‘Februa’.
For our celebration, we went to the World Buffet restaurant — the only place you can get roast beef, prawn cocktail and tiramisu in the one bowl.
March
Is named after Mars the Roman God of war. This is the month we went to war with COVID-19. Heading for a lockdown, your younger brother panicked and asked if his girlfriend, Rebecca, could stay for the three weeks it would take to banish the virus from our shores.
