I have must read authors, based on previous engagement. Even when their next book misses a beat, I still hold out for a return to form.
The older I get, the more likely it is I’ll give up on a book that doesn’t hold my attention — I used to be stubborn about finishing what I started.
Great books have two outcomes.
If I’ll refer to it or read it again, it goes on my shelf. If I enjoyed it but got everything from it I needed, it goes in the bucket. I don’t share it, or give it to a charity shop. Instead, I tell everyone how good it is, I want that author to sell more, make more money and keep writing.
