You are right, of course. I am comparing used with new. And you certainly don't want to lose money. It's a tricky balance, isn't it.
KDP won't let me sell my print to order paperback books for less than they cost to produce and sell, so I make very little from them at £7.99. But I find that most of my sales come from digital sales (£2.99). Again, it isn't a lot but sales are steady and many come back to read my others.
I've tinkered with pricing. Too high, no sales. Too low, no cash.
I wrote the article out of frustration. There is so much choice and as much as I would like to read more than I do, I only have so much time.
So I'm going to read Grisham for £4.50 rather than some random guy who hasn't had his book professionally proof read or edited for £16.41. But, if he reduced it to £7.99 i'd buy it then and that would put a £1 in his pocket.
